מהירות ממוצעת היא מהירות קבועה המייצגת תנועה במהירות משתנה.

אם נשתמש בהגדרת המהירות במקרה שבו גוף נע במהירות משתנה, נקבל מהירות קבועה המייצגת תנועה במהירות המשתנה.

מהירות קבועה זו היא המהירות הממוצעת.

המהירות הממוצעת מוגדרת לפי היחס שבין העתק התנועה הכולל לזמן התנועה הכולל:

במקרה מיוחד, כאשר גוף נע בשתי מהירויות שונות: V₁  ו- V₂, בזמני תנועה זהים, המהירות הממוצעת שווה לממוצע חשבוני פשוט בין שתי מהירויות. 

דוגמה: מכונית נוסעת ממטולה לאילת לאורך 511 ק"מ במשך 5 שעות, נחשב את המהירות הממוצעת.
